Q & A With Myriam T.
1. What is your role in the buying department for Jean Machine?
I am the Buyer for women’s sportswear. As a Buyer, my role is to source the right brands and products for the Jean Machine profile, at prices that are deemed reasonable for our customers. I study market reports and trend forecasts, travel to tradeshows, supplier showrooms, factories and product design events in order to determine fashion trends, styles, colours and fabrications.
2. Why do you love fashion?
Fashion really defines the times that we live in and it captures the defining spirit of any moment in time. It is meant to add some fun into everyday life, and is a way to express who you are. I fell in love with fashion at a very young age in the 80’s while watching designers being interviewed by Jeanne Beker on Fashion Television and Tim Blanks on Fashion File.
3. Where do you find inspiration for fashion?
Inspiration can come from many places! From fashion runway photos, street style shots from around the world, shopping in various boutiques, going through fabric swatches and looking at blogs plus social media photos.
4. If you could raid any celebrity’s closet, whose would it be and why?
Oh so many options! I’d love to raid Victoria Beckham’s closet for her tasteful and sophisticated styles, I’m sure I’d find great clothing pieces in there! Close second would be equally Sarah Jessica Parker, Alexa Chung and Blake Lively. Plus Maripier Morin, a celebrity from Quebec and also on the Hockey Wives television show. I’d love to raid everything in her closet!
5. What are the top trends for the fall season?
Currently it’s all about shoulders – cold shoulder and off-shoulder tops and dresses are all the rage! The 90’s are back with choker necklaces, choker necklines, bodysuits, patch embellishments and the item of the season – the bomber jacket. There is also a 70’s influence as we’re seeing bell sleeves on tops and dresses, turtlenecks and high-waisted denim. In terms of colors, there are a lot of rich tones of wine, eggplant, olive, khaki, cognac, rust and a soft muted mauve and blush color.
5. What new trends are you excited about for fall?
The bomber is the “it jacket” of the season! Available in on trend colours such as wine and olive, with flower embroidery, Sherpa lining, floral prints and various lengths – there certainly is a bomber for everyone! Plus deconstructed denim and raw edges is a growing trend.
6. Looking back on past trends, what is one that you can’t believe you wore?
I’m sure that there are a few, but what comes to mind are more beauty mistakes, such as over plucking my eyebrows in the 90’s, and being a bottle blond in my early 20’s.
7. Do you have any philosophies, principles or tips about fashion to share?
The rules that used to exist in fashion no longer apply as they used to. There is a way to wear white after Labour Day and trends in fashion come and go at a rapid rate. I think that what it comes down to is for everyone to wear what makes him or her feel and look good! Dress to complement their body type and remember that confidence and a smile are always in fashion. I would add that fit is important and we must not be afraid to get our clothes fitted properly through alterations, if need be.
8. What’s going to be in your closet this season?
I start with the base – a great fitting pair of denim. I particularly love the Guess Curve-X mid-rise skinny and a high-rise black skinny from Just Black. I’ve got a couple of our YDE bomber jackets which I love to layer on top of a boyfriend t-shirt and jeans for a casual look, or on top of a ribbed fitted dress worn with a high-heel ankle boot. I absolutely love the Promesa tiger brushed long line vest with pockets, which is great for styling an outfit – it is in a tiger brushed jersey fabric that is ultra-soft, comfortable and easy to care for. I absolutely want to get a RD Style vegan leather moto jacket, as you can’t go wrong with a classic biker jacket.
